The Wellsboro Varsity Softball shutout rival North Penn-Liberty on Monday, May 3 as the Lady Hornets celebrated Senior Night.
"It was great to earn the win against a rival on Senior Night," head coach Ron Brought said. "We were able to capitalize on our opponents errors and score runs in bunches. It was another complete game. We had a strong performance from Kerrah pitching, played strong defensively, including a double play in the 3rd, and we're able to string hits together with timely walks to end it early. Key hits included Madaline Bordas' two doubles, Kerrah's stand up triple and a big 2-run home run by Chelsie English.
The win was also Brought's 50th career win as skipper in the Green and White.
"Reaching 50 wins is a true testament to the talented softball players I've been so fortunate to coach," continued Brought. "In addition to all of the great players, I've always had excellent coaches in the dugout with me. This is a team accomplishment in every way."
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning where the Lady Hornets scored 4 runs to take the game's first lead. Sophomore Jordyn Abernathy reached on an error to start the inning, senior Jena Boyce drew a walk, and junior Emma Coolidge struck out but reached base due to an error. With the bases loaded an English single scored Abernathy and Boyce, then a double by Bordas brought Coolidge and sophomore Molly Ingerick, running for English, home.
In the 5th senior Kerrah Clymer led off with a triple then later scored as Boyce singled to make it 5-0. Boyce then scored as English homered to make it a 7-0 game. The Lady Hornets added three more runs in the 6th by Clymer, Boyce, and Coolidge.
The Lady Hornets had 7 hits on the afternoon, led by two from English and Bordas and single hits by Clymer, Boyce, and Abernathy. English finished the afternoon with 4 RBIs and Bordas drove in 3 runs of her own. Clymer pitched a complete game, allowing 4 hits, no runs while striking out 6 on 61 pitches.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 9-3 (6-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action at Athens on Wednesday, May 5.
