A 7th inning rally by Wyalusing pushed the Lady Rams past Wellsboro, 10-9, on Monday, May 9.
Wellsboro found themselves leading 9-0 after the 1st four innings. An early home run by freshman Alexandra Urena scored her and junior Jordyn Abernathy put the Lady Hornets up 2-0 in the first. Urena homered again, this time a grand slam to center field, that scored Abernathy, junior Molly Ingerick, and senior Abbye Cavanaugh to put the Lady Hornets in front, 6-0.
After a scoreless 3rd, Wellsboro added 3 more runs, two of them on a double by junior Madaline Bordas that scored Urena and junior Rylie Boyce, and the third as Bordas scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0. In the bottom half of the inning, however, that's when things started to unravel. The Lady Rams scored once in the bottom of the 4th but added 6 runs in the 5th to make it a two-run game.
A run in the bottom of the sixth cut Wellsboro's lead to one before the Lady Rams would go on to win in the bottom of the 7th. A base hit by Ashlyn Neiley got things started for Wyalusing. After two consecutive outs a double by Dakota Hugo scored Neiley to tie the game up at 9-all then in the next at bat Laci Norton hit a line drive that scored Hugo for the walk-off win.
Bordas and Urena combined for 6 of Wellsboro's 9 hits on the afternoon, both going 3-for-4. Ingerick, Cavanaugh, and Abernathy had the other 3 hits. Boyce and Urena both spent time in the circle, with Boyce starting and earning the loss. She pitched 6 & 1/3 innings allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Urena pitched the final 1/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs on 1 hit with 3 walks.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets' record to 6-11 (4-9 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action later this afternoon for a non-league game at Coudersport.
