The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team split a doubleheader with Athens on Monday, April 29. The Lady Hornets took game one 13-3, then fell 11-8 in game two.
In the first game Wellsboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings. Athens rallied to tie the game up in the top of the 4th, however Wellsboro's bats answered in the bottom half of the inning, going on a 10-0 tear for the win.
Hannah Taylor and Genevieve Fleming both went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the young Lady Hornets while Rylee Coolidge and Adelyn Frantz were both 2-for-2. Kaylee Frazier and Luisa Crocco rounded out Wellsboro's 12 hits in the game. Coolidge and Lacie Brutsman scored 3 runs each in the game while Taylor and Frantz scored twice. Fleming, Delaney Morral, and Crocco added the remaining runs.
Frantz and Fleming split time on the mound for Wellsboro. Frantz allowing 3 runs on 3 hits in the first 3 & 1/3 innings while striking out 8. Fleming threw the final 1 & 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
In game two the Lady Wildcats scored 2 runs in the 1st to take an early lead before Wellsboro answered back with a pair of runs in the 2nd to tie the game. Athens then outscored Wellsboro 9-6 over the next three innings to hang on for the win.
Wellsboro accumulated 6 hits in game two, one each by Paityn Biery, Paige Browning, Fleming, Ava Wood, Molly Doan, and Mariah Rodgers. Madalynn Flannery, Emaleigh Hamblin, Browning (2), Fleming, and Paige Rush scored runs.
Browning started and threw 2 & 1/3 innings, allowing 9 runs on 6 hits with 7 walks and 7 strikeouts. Fleming also threw 1 & 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (4-5) is back in action Thursday at Wyalusing.
