WYALUSING - The Panthers stayed undefeated on the season and kept their spot atop the NTL East by beating Wyalusing 9-8 in nine innings Wednesday.
It was a back-and-forth contest with the Panthers taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. They made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth but Wyalusing got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice to cut it to 3-2.
Northeast added two more runs in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2 and took the lead into the seventh. Down to their last at-bats, Wyalusing's Arielle Kneller answered, hitting a 3-run home run over the right field fence to send the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eight inning Northeast scored four in the top of the ninth, keyed by Hailey Phillips' 2-run double.
Wyalusing would answer as Kasey Devoir led off with a double, followed by a Cathryn Pugh bunt single. Laci Holdren doubled them both in to cut it to a 1-run lead but couldn't get over the hump.
"It was a terrific game," Wyalusing coach Jack Loomis said. "I give them credit, the other team kept battling."
Calla Martin and McKayla Holbert combined to go 6-for-9 with two triples to lead the Panthers. Martin scored twice with 1-RBI while Holbert had 2-RBI while scoring once.
Phillips, Nikki Emick, Courtney Coleman and Kelsey Goodwin had Northeast's other hits, with Phillips' a double. She added 2-RBI while Chelsie Souto had one.
Kelsey Carlsen scored twice for the Panthers while Phillips, Emick, Goodwin and Maddy Johnson all scored runs.
Souto got the win, going the distance to strike out 14 while allowing 12 hits, eight runs and no walks.
Kneller led Wyalusing at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double, 4-RBI and run scored. Ally DeVoir was 2-for-4 with a run while Kasey DeVoir and Laci Holdren both went 2-for-5. Kase DeVoir crossed home three times with two stolen bases while Holdren had 2-RBI with two runs scored.
Cathryn Pugh, Lauren Chadwick and Crystal Shirk had one hit each with Pugh scoring once.
Emily Faulkner took the loss, striking out 10 while allowing four walks, nine hits and nine runs in nine innings of work.
Loomis sees this game as a learning experience for his young team.
"Looking back at the game we made a lot of mistakes," Loomis said. "But I'm really proud, our girls showed they can play with one of the best teams. If we just clean up our defense we have a shot at this."
The Rams travel to Cowanesque Valley Friday.
Sam Wood had a perfect game after four innings as the young Tigers put together a strong performance in the IAC win Wednesday.
"We were very efficient tonight on defense besides the fifth inning," Tioga coach Jim Wood said. "Catcher Brittany Vergason called a fantastic game and our defense played fantastic behind her. I'm really happy with where were going, we're moving in the right direction."
Wood struck out seven while allowing no walks, two hits and no earned runs while throwing just 37 pitches in the game.
Danie Barto led the team at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, 2-RBI and five runs scored. Raven Worthing was 2-for-2 with three walks, two runs and RBI.
Deanna Hutchison went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and four runs scored while Vergason was 2-for-4 with a double and 4-RBI. Bry Godfrey, Donnette Hutchison and Wood also had hits. Godfrey and Hutchison knocked in one run each while Wood scored three times in the game. Sierra Beebe scored twice while Sam Pond crossed home once.
Tioga (4-2) will host Newfield Friday.
The Cardinals scored all seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Wolverines in IAC action Wednesday.
Carmella Ruth and Kiana Manuel had two hits each to lead the Wolverines, with Manuel's a double. Ruth also had 2-RBI.
Sabrina Bowman added a double and run scored while Cassie Morey also had a hit and run. Megan Wilbur notched a hit for the Wolverines as well.
Stephanie Bellis took the loss, striking out two while allowing three walks and eight hits.
Sam Mertson led Newark Valley with two singles and a double while Jess Darpino had a triple and Taylor Hamilton hit a double.
Kirsten Chase got the win, striking out eight while walking none.
Waverly is at SVE Friday.
Olivia May struck out 11 while allowing no walks and four hits to lead the Crusaders to the win.
At the plate Sydney Dimon was 3-for-3 with a triple, double and 3-RBI while Alivia Clark was 3-for-5 with a double, five runs scored and 2-RBI. Emily Lepkowski and Mackenzie Maloney both went 3-for-5 while Lepkowski added 3-RBI. Detta Gublow and Sammy Erbach had two hits each with Erbach adding 4-RBI while Becca Saggiomo and Abby Carr had one hit each.
Taylor Chaffee had two hits to lead the Senecas while Jesse Stansfield scored the loss.
