LERAYSVILLE - The Northeast Bradford Panthers pounded out seven runs in the first three innings as they picked up an 8-4 win over Wellsboro to win their Lady Panthers' Softball Tournament on Saturday.
Northeast Bradford had reached the final with a 13-2 victory over Mountain View, while Wellsboro reached the final by topping Tunkhannock 7-4.
"It was our first tournament of the year and we were excited to have it here," Northeast Bradford's MaKaylah Holbert said.
"It was a nice confidence booster," Calla Johnson said.
Maddy Johnson started things out for the Panthers with a leadoff single and with one out Calla Johnson hit a two-run home run to put the Panthers on top 2-0.
In the second inning Northeast Bradford led to the lead as Monica Brown drew a leadoff walk and her courtesy runner Mackenzie Moore advanced on a wild pitch.
With two outs Johnson singled home Brown and Holbert followed with a single, before Calla Johnson reached on an error, allowing the Panthers to get three runs in the inning.
In the third inning Northeast Bradford got a leadoff single from Bridget Haverly and Brown followed with a single. After a sacrifice from Chelsie Souto, Julia Williams had a two-run double to make it 7-0.
After losing a lot of players to graduation from last year's district championship team, the Panthers were happy to see some of the newer players step up on Saturday.
"It's nice to start off like this," Souto said. "The new players all did a good job."
"It was really nice for the offense to come alive, we have a whole new offense this year," Holbert said.
Wellsboro's four runs all came in the fourth inning as Maggie Smith led off with a single and Paige Carr followed with a single. A fielder's choice put Darci Warriner on first and Carr on second.
With two outs Baylea Lehman singled to load the bases and freshman Alexa Singer hit a grand slam to left field to cut the deficit to 7-4.
"It made me a little nervous," Souto said of the Green Hornets comeback bid. "But, I knew I had a great defense behind me."
Getting off to the 7-0 lead made things a little easier for Souto on the mound.
"It was a lot easier, it took a lot of pressure off," Souto said. "I could just go out and throw and not worry as much."
Down three the Green Hornets had a runner in scoring position in each of the last three innings, but Souto left them stranded.
In the sixth inning the Panthers tacked on an insurance run as Calla Johnson got a two-out double and scored on an RBI single by Angelia Laudermilch.
Maddy Johnson had three hits for the Panthers, with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored and Calla Johnson had two hits, a double and a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Holbert and Haverly each had a hit and a run scored, Brown had a hit and Moore scored two runs for her. Williams had the double and two RBI, Laudermilch had a hit and an RBI and Coleman had a hit.
Souto struck out eight and walked one, while allowing 11 hits in the game.
Brooke Kohler struck out four and walked none, while allowing 11 hits for Wellsboro.
Singer was 3-for-3 with the grand slam, four RBI and a run scored and Carr and Smith each had two hits, each of them getting a double for one of the hits, and Carr scored a run.
Kohler had two hits and Jenny Young and Lehman each had a hit, with Lehman scoring a run, while Warriner scored a run.
"It was really nice to have all the fans here," Souto said.
NEB 13, Mountain View 2
The Panthers pounded out 14 hits in their tournament-opening win.
Holbert had a 3-for-3 day with a double, a triple and a run scored and two RBI.
Williams had a pair of doubles four RBI and a run scored for the Panthers and Brown had three hits, with a home run and a double, three RBI and three runs scored.
Coleman had three hits, with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Maddy Johnson had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Calla Johnson scored a run and Laudermilch had a hit and an RBI, while Haverly had a hit and two runs scored.
Souto had an RBI and Moore scored three runs.
Souto struck out six, walked two and allowed three hits and two runs in the game.
Wellsboro 7, Tunkhannock 4
Four home runs helped lead the Green Hornets into the title game.
Smith had a pair of home runs for the Green Hornets, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Sarah Ingerick and Carr also had home runs in the game.
Ingerick had two RBI and scored a run with her home run and Carr had a solo home run.
Kohler had two hits and scored two runs, one of her hits was a double, and Young scored a run.
Singer pitched for the Green Hornets, striking out one, walking one and allowing seven hits.
