WELLSBORO - The last time Wellsboro and Troy met the Green Hornets suffered their only loss of the season.
On Wednesday they got a little redemption, handing the Trojans a 1-0 loss as Wellsboro took over the lead in the NTL, Division I softball standings.
"It feels really good," Sarah Ingerick said. "Knowing the last time we played them they beat us so it was nice to beat them at home."
Earlier this season Ingerick was struggling at the plate, but after a 4-for-4 game against Wyalusing on Tuesday the junior carried that momentum into Wednesday's game, driving in the winning run with an RBI double in the third inning.
Ingerick feels more confident at the plate right now and she feels like Tuesday's big game was a help.
"It's nice to get back to that," she said. "I think that gave me a lot more confidence."
While Ingerick was delivering the big hit, freshman Alyssa Yungwirth was making sure just one run was enough as she shut down the Trojans, holding them to just four hits.
"It was pretty fun and exciting," Yungwirth said. "It got kind of tough, but we kept it together."
The freshman had plenty of nerves going into the game.
"I was nervous going in, but I kind of calmed myself," she said.
Troy had runners on base each of the first six innings, but Yungwirth was always able to get out of any jam, coming up with the big pitches.
In the seventh inning she fell behind the first batter 3-1, before battling back to get the out. Coach Greg Carr came out to talk to his infield and young pitcher and that helped calm the nerves.
"I was shaking a little," Ingerick said.
"That calmed me down a little bit," Yungwirth said of Carr's visit to the mound.
In the third inning Jenny Young drew a one-out walk and Yungwirth singled and Ingerick followed with the RBI double.
Yungwirth had two hits in the game and Young had a hit and a run scored. Ingerick had a hit and an RBI and Alexa Singer and Darci Warriner had hits.
Yungwirth struck out four and walked three, allowing four hits for the Green Hornets.
Jerilyn Ross struck out 10 for Troy, allowing five hits and two walks.
Vanessa Watson had three hits for the Trojans and Kelsey Bristol added a hit.
Wellsboro now takes a one-game lead over Troy in the NTL, Division I standings and they control their own destiny.
"It's good, but we have got to keep winning," Ingerick said.
