Wellsboro and Northeast Bradford both defeated an NTL foe behind good pitching performances to advance to the district semi-finals in their respective classes. The Hornets won over the Rams while the Panthers topped Williamson.
NP-Liberty fell in a heartbreaker to Muncy while Canton was defeated by Bloomsburg.
WELLSBORO — The District IV, Class AA defending softball champions started their title defense with a sharp win over the Rams in Thursday's quarterfinal.
Alyssa Yungwirth led the charge as she was tough in the circle, striking out 14 in a 2-hitter while allowing no walks. She struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced.
She was also 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI at the plate.
Sydney Tremper and Darci Warriner both went 2-for-3 for the Hornets while Sarah Ingerick, Kailee Clymer and Emma Poirier went 1-for-3.
Wellsboro jumped out early with a run in the bottom of the first. Wyalusing hung tough throughout the middle portion of the game but in the sixth inning the Hornets knocked out five runs to put the game away.
Katie and Kristie Epler both went 1-for-3 for Wyalusing.
Kyleigh Ward scored the loss, allowing six walks and no strikeouts.
The Hornets will play 2-seed Loyalsock at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.
LERAYSVILLE — Gabby Slater shut down the Warriors as the Panthers advanced to the District IV quarterfinals Thursday.
Slater scattered four hits while allowing no walks and striking out six in the shut out.
Hannah Dum led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, 2-RBI and a run scored.
Danielle Moore had a double with two runs while Megan Brown, Taya Howell and Jaycee Brown also had hits.
Brown, Slater and Katie Boardman all scored while Boardman and McKenna Wheaton each knocked in a run.
NEB broke open the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third. They added three more in the fifth and scored a safety run in the sixth.
Kendra Colegrove, Andi Regalbutto, Emily Hackett and Kailee Shaefer had the Williamson hits.
Sarah Bates scored the loss, striking out two while allowing six hits, one walk and six runs, one of them earned.
NEB will play in the 4 p.m. game next Tuesday.
Muncy scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the quarterfinal softball win Thursday.
They scored two runs in the third off a throwing error.
NP-Liberty got their runs in the fourth and fifth as they out hit Muncy 9-5 but were undone by their four errors.
Savanah Doney was 3-for-4 with a triple and double to lead the Mountaineers while Carmen Bates was 2-for-3 with a double.
Emily Strange, Lauren Smith, Britta Berguson and Becka Rossell each had a hit. Strange and Berguson also had RBI.
Doney took the loss, striking out four.
Kat Edner led Muncy as she went 2-for-4 and got the win in the circle, striking out seven.
The defending district champions proved to be too much for the Warriors in quarterfinal action.
Bloomsburg out hit Canton 9-5 as they scored a run in the first, two in the third, three in the fifth and their final one in the sixth.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Evelyn Katona hit a home run. She would score again in the sixth for their second run.
Katona was 2-for-3 on the day while Kelsey Griffin and Maggy Machmer also had hits.
The Warriors threatened in the second as they loaded the bases but couldn't get a run across.
Katona scores the loss, allowing one walk and striking out none.
Emily Wawroski got the win. She also struck out none while walking three.
Jerrika Chorba was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored to lead Bloomsburg. Alex Luxardo and Wawroski each had an RBI double as well.
The Panthers will face off with Muncy at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
Kate Cron had a career day for the Redskins as they ended their regular season with a non-league win.
Cron was 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs and 6-RBI while Kait McCarter was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Paige Wampole was 2-for-5 with 6-RBI, a double and a run scored while Sydney Post was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
All told the top four batters for Sayre were 11-for-17.
Blair Wampole and Rory Tigue also had hits for the Redskins while Domi Woodruff knocked in a run. Alia Post and Tigue both scored twice.
McCarter got the win, striking out five while allowing five hits, one walk and three earned runs.
Quincy Fry led Sullivan with a home run while Alexis Randall, Kassandra Houseknecht, MacKenzie Doyle and Noelle Henninger also had hits.
Randall and Henninger both scored while Thomas added an RBI.
Thomas scores the loss, striking out one while allowing 13 hits, seven walks and 14 runs, 10 of them earned.
