Doss' walk-off double lifts Towanda past Canton in season opener.

WYSOX — Justine Vargason went 3-for-4 with two runs, 3-RBI and two doubles, and Madi Doss hit a walk-off double as Towanda topped Canton 5-4 in their season opener Monday.
"It was so great," Doss said about her big hit. "I was shaking. I was nervous, but I knew I could do it."
Canton struck first with two runs in the top of the third, but Towanda rallied in the bottom half of the inning with a run. Canton made it 3-1 with a run in the top of the fourth, but Towanda struck twice in the bottom of the fifth to knot things up.
The Warriors went up again, this time 4-3, in the top of the seventh. They could have added to their lead, but Lauryn Watkins was thrown out at home.
In the bottom half of the inning, McLinko led off with single then tied the game two batters later on a Vargason single. Doss then knocked in Vargason with a double to win the game.
"I said 'I need to hit this ball and drive in this run,'" recalled Doss.
She knew it was an extra base hit off the bat and was even more thrilled when she saw Vargason score.
"It was an amazing feeling," Doss said about seeing her teammate cross home to secure the win.
Cearra McLinko was 2-for-3 with three runs while Doss had the double and RBI.
Sydney Schoonover and Kaylee Fulmer also had hits for Towanda.
Vargason struck out four, walked two and allowed seven hits in the win for the Lady Knights.
Brooke Ward and Hailey Wesneski both went 2-for-3 on the day. Wesneski scored twice while Ward crossed home once.
Watkins had a double with an RBI, Evelyn Katona had a hit with 2-RBI while MacKayla Wesneski also had a hit.
Katona scored the loss, striking out four while allowing seven hits and no walks.
WAVERLY, N.Y. — The Crusaders broke open a 1-1 game with six run sixth inning to pick up the IAC Large South win Monday.
Waverly out hit the Class C defending state champions 7-4, but struggled in the field with five errors.
Mackenzie Mahajan was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Notre Dame while Ally Wichtowski was 1-for-3 with a run and Taylor VanDine was 1-for-3 with a run and 2-RBI.
Jordyn Fargo scored twice while Maura Glovins, Chloe Stemerman and Peyton Maloney all scored.
Isabel Milazzo got the win, striking out 10 while allowing seven hits, no walks and two earned runs on 103 pitches.
Shailei Kraft led Waverly with a 3-for-3 day while scoring once. Riley Hall was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Morgan Adams had a hit with an RBI, with Zoe Mennig also getting a hit.
Wendi Hammond started and went 5 2/3-innings to take the loss, getting knocked out in Notre Dame's big inning.
She struck out six while allowing three hits, five walks and seven runs, none of them earned, on 115 pitches.
Kraft pitched the final third, throwing 20 pitches with two walks.
Hall was in the circle for the last inning, allowing one hit on 12 pitches.
Alyssa Yungwirth struck out 13 as the Hornets won their NTL opener in softball action Monday.
Yungwirth allowed just five hits and one earned run on 101 pitches.
The Hornets scored twice in the top of the third to take an early lead. NEB struck back with a run in the bottom of the fifth with Wellsboro retaliating with an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the win.
Yungwirth was 3-for-4 with a run scored at the plate, while Sydney Tremper and Cathryn Brought each had a double. Brought added 2-RBI.
Brianne Keane, Kailee Clymer and Tiana Lecker also had hits for Wellsboro while Ryann Adams scored twice.
For the Panthers, Megan Brown was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Gabby Slater, Annie Williams and Kenzi Haight also had hits. Jenna Saxe scored their lone run.
In the circle Slater earned the loss, allowing eight hits and three walks but none of the runs were earned. She struck out seven on 119 pitches.
The Wildcats overcame an early deficit to pull out the NTL softball win over their Valley rivals Monday.
The Lady 'Skins led 2-0 after the first inning but three runs in the second, third and fourth put the Wildcats up for good.
Emma Adams (3-for-4) and Aubrey Allen (3-for-4) led Athens at the plate. Adams had an RBI with a run scored while Allen scored twice and knocked in a run.
Reagan Lynch was 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2-RBI, Morgan Ferguson was 2-for-4 with two runs, Kendra Brown had a double while Lauren Galasso, Mimi Martin and Taylor Jenney also had hits.
Haley Barry had 2-RBI with a run scored, Martin had a run with an RBI and Jenney had a run with 2-RBI.
Freshman Morgan Bennett got her first varsity win, striking out three while allowing four walks, one hit and one earned run.
For Sayre Camryn Brown had a double with two runs scored while Kate Cron also scored and Dominique Woodruff had an RBI.
Kaitlyn McCarter scored the loss, striking out two while allowing one walk.
Sarah Hollenbeck was 4-for-6 with 3-RBI and three runs to lead the Tigers in their IAC softball win Monday.
Marissa Howe was 3-for-6 with two doubles, 3-RBI and a run scored, Mariah Culver was 3-for-5 with 2-RBI and a run, Maddy Dydynski was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, 4-RBI and three runs and Sara Strong was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs.
Megan Godfrey was 2-for-3 while Kurstan Martin had a double with two runs. Justice Pahlman also had a hit.
Culver struck out 17 in the 1-hitter, allowing one walk.
