MANSFIELD — A seven-run fourth inning helped key the win for North Penn-Liberty as they defeated Loyalsock 14-9 in the District 4, Class AAA playoffs.
Loyalsock struck first with a pair of first-inning runs, before the Mounties answered in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Liberty scored three in the second to take the lead, and they never trailed from there on out.
Loyalsock got within 4-3 before Liberty's seven-run inning gave them an 11-3 lead.
Loyalsock scored two in the fifth to get within 11-5, but Liberty answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to go up 13-5.
The Lancers got four runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 13-9, before Liberty made it 14-9 in the bottom half of the inning.
The seventh inning was the only inning neither team scored in the game.
Carmen Bates keyed the seven-run inning with a three-run double. She had a hit, three RBI and scored two runs in the game. Brooke Harvey had three hits, with a double, and scored three runs, and Savanah Doney was 4-for-4 with three doubles in the win.
Mackenzie Heater had a hit and scored a run and Abby Heatley had a hit and scored a run.
Emily Strange scored three runs and Lauren Smith scored a run.
Jillian Berguson scored a run and Mariah Kshir scored a run.
Doney struck out one in the game.
Sam Stopper had two hits, with a double, for Loyalsock.
Liberty takes on Wellsboro at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Turbotville.
Aubrey Allen had two hits, including her 100th career hit, and the game-winning RBI on offense and threw a complete game, striking out one and allowing two unearned runs on five hits to lead Athens to their 3-2 comeback win over Jersey Shore in the first round of AAAA District IV softball playoffs on Tuesday.
After Jersey Shore broke the 0-0 tie in the sixth inning and went up 2-0, Athens only had one opportunity to win the game. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Leah Reid singled to left, followed by a double by Hailey Barry. With runners on first and third, Kendra Brown reached on error. Reid scored on the play, making the score 2-1.
Angie Hudock came in as courtesy runner for the catcher, Brown. Emma Adams singled to center on the next play and Barry tried to score, but she was thrown out by a perfect relay between the center fielder, the pitcher and the catcher.
With two outs and runners on first and third, Reagan Lynch jumped on the first pitch she saw and slapped an infield single, scoring Hudock.
Now a tie game, with the winning run on second and two outs, Allen stepped to the plate. On the first pitch, Allen hit the game-winning single to score Adams.
Allen would go on to shut out Jersey Shore in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 3-2 win.
For Athens, Adams finished with two hits and a run, Reagan Lynch finished with two hits and an RBI, Barry had one double, Reid had one hit and Hudock scored a run.
"I'm really happy for the girls," Athens coach Jim Wood said. "They didn't get down on themselves after committing a couple errors in the sixth. We stayed positive. We talked about it all year, how important it was to finish strong. We're happy to move on. Adams pitched a great game. She and Brown did a really great job of keeping the Jersey Shore offense off balance."
Athens now advances to the AAAA District IV softball semi-finals. They will be taking on first-seeded Milton on Friday at the Mosser Complex in Warrior Run.
Alyssa Yungwirth threw a complete game shutout, struck out 14 batters and had two runs, two hits — including a home run — and drove in two runs to lead Wellsboro to their 4-0 victory over Bloomsburg on Tuesday in the District IV, AAA playoffs.
For Wellsboro, Cathryn Brought had two hits and an RBI; Ryann Adams and Hailey Neal each had one run and one hit; Heidi Zuchowski finished with one hit; and Kailee Clymer and Brianne Keane had one hit.
Wellsboro advances to the semi-finals where they will meet North Penn-Liberty on Thursday at the Mosser Complex in Warrior Run.
Karmen Short hit a two-run walk off home run to give CV the 7-6 edge in extra innings of a Class A, District IV playoff game on Tuesday.
CV now advances to face first-seeded Muncy in the semi-finals of the Class A, District IV softball playoff.
Marissa Howe scored two runs, hit a double and a home run and drove in two runs to lead Tioga to their 5-4 win over Thomas Edison in Class C, Section IV playoffs on Tuesday.
Mariah Culver pitched for Tioga. In seven innings of work, she allowed four runs, one earned, on nine hits and struck out nine.
Sarah Hollenbeck also hit a home run for Tioga. She scored two runs and had two RBI as well. Culver added one hit and one RBI; Kelsey Vosburg finished with one run, one hit and a stolen base; Sarah Strong added two hits and Madalyn Dydynski and Kurstan Martin each had one hit.
Tioga advances to take on the winner of Seton Catholic and Union Springs in the semi-finals on Thursday.
Wendi Hammond scored a run, had three hits, including a double and a home run, and two RBI on offense and pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing one unearned run on one hit to lead Waverly to their 4-1, Class B, Section IV playoff win over Oneonta on Tuesday.
Kari VanAllen finished with a run, a double and two RBI for Waverly; Zoe Mennig finished with one run and one hit; Shailei Kraft, Riley Hall, Jordan Mente and Morgan Adams each had one hit; and Kennedy Wheeler scored a run.
Waverly now advances to play Susquehanna Valley in the semi-finals on Thursday.
Isabel Milazzo threw a complete game, striking out 13 and allowing one earned run on three hits; and on offense, she had one hit and an RBI to lead Notre Dame to their 7-1 win over Sidney in Class C, Section IV softball playoffs on Tuesday.
For Notre Dame, Mackenzie Mahajan had one run, three hits, including a double, and one RBI; Maura Glovins added one run and two hits, including a double; Megan Niles finished with one run, one double and one RBI; Mackenzie Maloney had one run, one hit and one RBI; Courtney Crater and Jordyn Fargo added one run and one hit each; Ally Witchowski had one hit and Chloe Stemerman had one run.
Notre Dame now advances to the semi-finals of the Class C, Section IV softball bracket. They will take on the winner of Moravia and Bainbridge-Guilford on Thursday.
