The Wyalusing Rams softball team lost to Holy Cross, 15-0, in four innings in the first round of the Class AA, PIAA state tournament at Penn State-Scranton on Monday.
After a four run first inning by Holy Cross, Wyalusing's defense and starting pitcher Kyleigh Ward held strong in the second, allowing no runs.
But on offense, Wyalusing couldn't get anything going against Holy Cross's Ashley Walsh, who finished the game with three strikeouts and no runs allowed on one hit.
In the fourth inning, after a hit and an error to start the inning, Holy Cross's Jenna Bradley hit a three-run home run to give them a 10-run lead. Holy Cross would go on to score five more runs on three walks and three singles to seal their 15-0 win.
Kristie Epler finished with Wyalusing's lone hit, a single in the third.
Ward finished the game with two strikeouts and allowed 15 runs on 14 hits and six walks.
"All of the credit goes to Holy Cross," Wyalusing coach Jon Loomis said after the game. "They hit the ball hard and made us make plays. Some we made, some we didn't. We weren't prepared. They were prepared and they did the job. We made a lot of errors."
"Overall we had a good season, we put a few good games together," Loomis continued. "We had trouble with consistency all year, and I tell the kids 'To be a good team, you have to be consistent.' We weren't today, but I'm very proud of the team. We're a good team, we had a good season, we were district champs and we're very proud of that. Hopefully we'll be back next year."
Holy Cross advances to the second round of the Class AA, PIAA playoffs, where they will play the winner of Conwell Egan and Minersville on Thursday.
