SAYRE - The Redskins continued their strong play of late as they used a 5-run second inning to beat Liberty 8-3 in NTL softball action Tuesday.
"We are playing some pretty good ball," Sayre coach Chris Cooney said. "We've got 3-out-of-4 here in the last couple of weeks. We're starting to hit the ball."
At the plate Maria Servedio was 2-for-3 for Sayre with a double and run scored while Kaitlyn Tappan and Kristyn Tappan were 2-for-4. Both had doubles while Kaitlyn had 4-RBI and a run scored. Kristyn knocked in three runs.
Kelly Villanti, Brooke Wampole, Des Waltman and Kelsey Young each had hits, with Villanti's a double. She and Wampole each scored twice while young scored once.
Rachel Hurley also added a run.
Kristyn Tappan scored the win, striking out five while allowing three walks.
Maddie York went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored to lead Liberty while Maddie Wise, Kasey Evans, Nicole McCaslin, Cassie Frederick, Brittany Crumb and Mariah Berguson also had hits.
Kourtney Powlison added 2-RBI.
McCaslin took the loss, striking out three while allowing two walks.
Despite the win Cooney can still see some areas to improve.
"We're still making errors," he remarked. "But they aren't costing us like they did before."
Overall he's happy with their progress.
"The girls are staying in it," Cooney said. "I'm really proud of the way they are playing right now."
Sayre will host Troy today.
The Tigers improved to 8-2 in IAC softball action Tuesday.
After three scoreless innings Tioga exploded with six runs in the fourth, followed by five in the fifth to secure the win.
It was the eighth graders leading the way as Britt Vergason and Sam Wood both went 3-for-4. Vergason added a double, three runs and 2-RBI while Wood added two runs and 2-RBI.
Dani Barto went 3-for-5 with two runs and 3-RBI while Bry Godfrey and Sam Pond both went 2-for-4. Godfrey scored once and added an RBI while Pond scored twice with a run batted in.
Deanna Hutchison added two hits while Raven Worthing and Sierra Beebe also had hits. Worthing scored twice while Beebe crossed home once.
Wood picked up the win with eight strikeouts, one walk, three hits and one earned run.
Taylor Hoffman had two hits for Newfield with one a triple. Kayla Blanford took the loss, striking out three while allowing three walks and 20 hits.
Tioga hosts Odessa-Montour today.
