When it came to choosing a college location played a big role for Erin Smith.
The Tunkhannock senior, whose parents Barb and Greg Smith are from Towanda, liked the location of Bloomsburg and that played a role in her choice on where to play college softball.
"I definitely wanted to go to a school that was close enough to home that I could go home if I wanted, but far enough away to get away from everything," Smith said. "It's nice that it's close to home, but still kind of far away."
While the location was nice, it was really everything about Bloomsburg that made it the right choice for Smith.
"I really liked the school," she said. "I really liked the environment. Getting to play softball there is kind of a plus. They are well known for softball and my mom went there, so it really had everything."
Smith will be looked at as an outfielder in college and after having to spend part of her time in high school pitching, she is ready to focus fully on that position.
"It's really nice," she said. "I kind of came into this season not exactly wanting to pitch, but I kind of have to."
The senior knows that being able to focus fully on her defense and hitting, and not on her pitching, should just make her a better player.
With her major in college Smith knows it will be a lot of work, but she's ready for the challenge.
"I am going to major in pre physical therapy and with any kind of medical program it will be difficult, but I just have to manage my time," she said.
With what she plans to major in, a PSAC school seemed like a good choice for Smith.
"A lot of the PSAC schools have very good physical therapy programs," she said.
While Smith isn't sure how soon she can earn playing time, she is hoping to get the chance quickly.
"They didn't give me a whole lot of insight into that," she said. "There are only a couple of outfielders returning next year, so I am going to work hard and hopefully I can get one (a starting spot) as soon as I can."
One thing that Smith noticed at the school was how many younger players earned playing time there and she's hoping to do the same.
"When I went on my overnight there I know a lot of the girls were younger and are able to play a big role on the team and I'm hoping to do the same," Smith said.
