EAST TROY - The Troy softball team jumped in the driver's seat for the NTL Large School Division title Thursday.

They held on to beat Wellsboro 3-2 and now have a 2-game lead in the loss column over the Green Hornets and Towanda, the two teams tied for second.

The Trojans used a big second inning that saw them score three runs to take the lead.

Taylor Johnston led off with a single followed by Brooke Mattocks reaching on a bunt. With runners on second and third a Taylor Murray bunt was bobbled by Wellsboro third baseman Baylea Lehman and all runners ended up safe.

Troy pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann helped herself by hitting a bloop single to right field that drove in Johnston.

Wellsboro starter Alexa Singer was able to strike out batter Brooke Losey-Root but couldn't stop the bleeding as Jerilyn Ross hit a 2-run double into left field to put the Trojans up 3-0.

The Trojans looked to score another run as Sam Gentile tried for home on a ground ball in the infield but was thrown out by Hornet shortstop Sarah Ingerick.

Wellsboro got out of the inning after that by striking out Faith Ceely.

The Hornets struck back in the top of the fourth inning as Singer led off with triple to right field. Ingerick then brought her home with a sacrifice fly to cut it to 3-1.

Wellsboro would threaten again in the fifth and sixth innings.

They didn't score in the fifth but in the sixth Brooke Kohler led off with a double. She would eventually score to cut it to 3-2 but that's as close as the Hornets got.

Hoffmann earned the win, going all seven innings to strike out four while allowing five hits, one walk and two earned runs. She was also 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI.

Ross would end up 1-for-2 with 2-RBI while Johnston and Mattocks went 1-for-3.

Singer would score the loss, going the first two innings to strike out three while allowing four hits, no walks and two earned runs. She would go 2-for-3 from the plate with a triple.

Brooke Kohler came on for relief, pitching 1-hit ball in the final four innings. She struck out four while issuing no walks.

Kohler and Jordan Butters had doubles while Maggie Smith also had a hit.

Troy improves to 8-0 in league play while Wellsboro falls to 8-2, a half game ahead of the Lady Knights at 7-2.
