The Wellsboro Lady Hornets' early season woes continued as they lost 18-8 in 5 innings to Hughesville on Wednesday, March 29.
Hughesville plated 9 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to put the game firmly in their control, then added one run in the 2nd, and 4 in both the 3rd and 4th innings.
After being held scoreless for the first two innings the Lady Hornets' offense produced a pair of runs in the 3rd. Senior Maddi Bordas got things started with a single to left, followed by senior Jordyn Abernathy reaching on an error to put two runners on. A base hit by sophomore Lexi Urena scored Bordas then senior Rylie Boyce singled to score Abernathy, making it a 10-2 game. Junior Abby Owlett led off the 4th with a base hit, followed by a base hit from junior Caralyn Warner. Bordas then connected on a triple, scoring both Owlett and Warner, cutting the lead down to 14-4.
In the 5th senior Mariah Borden, Warner, and sophomore Arianah Lawton all reached base and scored, Bordas had another extra base hit, this time a double, then later scored on an Abernathy single to center field.
Wellsboro had 11 hits on the afternoon, led by Bordas' 3-for-3, 4 RBI performance at the plate. Abernathy and Urena were both 2-for-4, Borden, Owlett, and Lawton were all 1-for-3, and Boyce was 1-for-4.
Boyce was credited with the loss, allowing 18 runs on 7 hits with 13 walks and a strikeout.
Hughesville also won the JV game, 3-2.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 0-3 (0-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Friday, March 31 at Northeast Bradford.
