A 7th inning rally by the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team fell short in a 6-5 loss to Williamson Tuesday afternoon in the team's regular season finale.

Wellsboro trailed 6-3 entering the final inning and got two runs across. Senior Harleigh Cleveland led the inning off with a single then freshman Haylie Smith doubled to put two on. A ground out by sophomore Rylee Coolidge scored Cleveland, then a double from sophomore Adelyn Frantz scored Smith to cut the lead within a run. Williamson then got the remaining two outs and prevented any further damage.

Williamson took the early lead with runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings. The Lady Hornets then took the lead with a three-run 5th inning.

Freshman Gena Fleming reached base on error to lead off the inning, then junior Mazie Johnson singled to put two aboard for Wellsboro. A Cleveland sacrifice bunt moved Fleming to 3rd and Johnson to 2nd. Fleming scored the next at bat on a Smith double to put Wellsboro on the scoreboard. Sophomore Hannah Taylor came on to pinch run for Johnson and later scored in a pick-off attempt, to tie the game at 2-all. A Frantz double then scored Smith, putting Wellsboro ahead, 3-2.

Williamson then plated 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead at 4-3.

Frantz finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs and a pair of doubles. Smith was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 doubles and an RBI. Johnson (1-for-2) and Cleveland (1-for-2) made up the rest of the Lady Hornets' 7 hits.

Frantz started on the mound and threw 4 and one-third innings in a losing effort, allowing 6 runs (2 earned) on one hit with 8 walks and 11 strikeouts. Fleming came on in relief for the final inning and two-thirds. She had gave up 2 hits, walked two and struck out two.

Kenna Thomas went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Williamson. She also pitched a complete game, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits with 2 walks and 11 strikeouts.

Wellsboro finishes the season 10-10 (6-9 NTL Large School Division). The team is seeded 8th in the District IV Class 3A playoff standings. Post-season play begins next week.
