Lady Hornets Score 1st Win Over Season Over Sayre

The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team picked up their first win of the season, shutting out Sayre 11-0 in 5 innings in their home-opener Monday.

The Lady Hornets opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st. With two outs sophomore Adelyn Frantz singled to left field. Freshman Gena Fleming followed that by hitting into a fielder's choice, then both crossed home plate the next at bat as sophomore Teagan Novinger tripled to right. In the 2nd, junior Mazie Johnson got things started with a one-out base hit. Freshman Haylie Smith followed with a single and sophomore Rylee Coolidge added a double. All three scored to increase the Lady Hornets' lead to 5-0.

Wellsboro kept the lead at 5-0 until they exploded for six runs in the 4th. Smith, Frantz, Fleming, and sophomores Madalynn Flannery, Delaney Morral, and Kaylee Frazier all crossed home plate.

Frantz finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and 2 RBIs. Morral, Johnson, and senior Harleigh Cleveland all went 2-for-3, with RBIs. Smith, Coolidge, and sophomore Lacie Brutsman added solo hits. Smith added a stolen base, Frazier made 3 put outs and Novinger had 11 put outs.

Frantz started from the mound and threw the first three innings, walking one and striking out six. Smith threw the fourth inning, allowing one hit with 3 strikeouts and Fleming threw the fifth, striking out two.

Zoe Ward had the lone hit for the Lady Redskins. She also threw a complete game from the mound, allowing 11 runs (8 earned), on 13 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

Sayre edged Wellsboro 5-4 in the JV game. Brutsman led Wellsboro with a double and 2 RBIs. Flannery and sophomore Hannah Taylor both had base hits.

The win improves the Lady Hornets to 1-2 (1-2 NTL Large School Division). The team returns to action at Towanda this afternoon.
